The Shimidsu Blushing Bride tree (botanically known as Prunus ‘Shogetsu’) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and elegant of the Japanese flowering cherry trees. It is prized for its late-season blooms and graceful, spreading habit.
Key Characteristics
-
Flowers: The tree produces large, "blousy" double flowers (up to 20–30 petals each) that hang in pendulous clusters. They emerge from deep pink buds, opening as a soft, pale pink and gradually fading to a brilliant pure white—hence the name "Blushing Bride."
-
Form: It has a distinctive flat-topped or umbrella-like canopy with horizontal, gracefully arching branches. It is a small to medium-sized tree, typically reaching about 4–6 meters (13–20 feet) in height and spread.
-
Foliage: The leaves emerge as a pale bronze-green in the spring, maturing to a lush dark green in summer. In autumn, the tree provides another display of color as the foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red.
-
Bloom Time: It is a late-flowering variety, usually blooming in late April or May, which often helps the blossoms avoid early spring frosts.
Growth and Care
-
Best For: Small gardens, urban landscapes (it is pollution-tolerant), or as a focal specimen tree. It is also a popular choice for wedding or anniversary gifts.
-
Conditions: It thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. It is fully hardy but prefers a site sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate, hanging blossoms.
