The 'Prunus serrulata 'Shirofugen'' (also known as 'Fugenzo') is an ancient and highly-prized Japanese flowering cherry, celebrated for its unique, colour-changing late bloom.
Essential Characteristics 🌳
-
Appearance: A medium-sized, deciduous tree with a distinctive broadly spreading, flat-topped crown that widens dramatically with age. Its branches may eventually arch or hang downwards.
-
Flowers: Features large, double, fragrant flowers in profuse clusters. It is one of the latest cherries to bloom (late spring/early summer). The flowers are famous for their colour-change: they open from pink buds to a brilliant pure white, then slowly fade to a beautiful deep purplish-pink or mauve before the petals drop.
-
Foliage & Autumn Colour: Leaves emerge with a showy coppery-bronze or crimson flush in spring, mature to a dark green in summer, and provide a lovely display of orange, copper, and red in the autumn. 🍂
-
Size: Grows to a mature height of approximately 6–10 meters (20–33 feet) and an equal or greater spread.
Growing Information 🌱
-
Position: Requires full sun ☀️ to ensure the best flowering display and health.
-
Soil: Thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained loamy soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types (chalk, clay, sand) but absolutely must have good drainage.
-
Hardiness: Fully hardy.
-
Maintenance: Generally low maintenance. Prune only when necessary (to shape or remove dead wood) immediately after flowering in summer, as winter pruning can increase the risk of silver leaf disease. It is sterile and does not produce fruit, making it a "cleaner" ornamental choice.
-
Uses: An excellent, long-blooming specimen tree for lawns and parks.
