The Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' (also known as 'Kwanzan' or 'Sekiyama') is arguably the most popular and recognizable Japanese flowering cherry tree in Western cultivation.
Essential Characteristics
Flowers: Abundant, showy, deep pink, fully double blossoms that resemble powder puffs. They bloom in dense, hanging clusters in mid-to-late spring, after the Yoshino cherries.
Form: A medium-sized tree with a distinctive, strong vase-shaped form when young, spreading into a more rounded crown with age. It is a sterile variety and is fruitless.
Foliage: New leaves emerge a striking bronze-red/coppery color, contrasting beautifully with the pink flowers, then mature to dark green. They turn shades of yellow and bronze-orange in the fall.
Size: Typically grows to 7.5–9 meters (25–30 feet) high with a similar spread. It has a medium growth rate.
Growing Information
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun for the best flowering performance, but tolerates light shade.
Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained loams. Avoid poorly drained, soggy soil.
Hardiness: One of the most cold-hardy double-flowered cherries,
Pruning: Generally low maintenance. Prune only to shape or remove dead/diseased wood, and do this immediately after flowering to avoid infection.
Use: Excellent for street planting, as a lawn specimen, or for lining driveways due to its strong structure and spectacular spring display.
