The 'Scarletta' Crabapple (Malus toringo 'Scarlett', often sold as 'Scarletta') is a highly ornamental, small deciduous tree prized for its dramatic, ever-changing foliage colour throughout the seasons.
Essential Characteristics
Habit: A small, moderately vigorous deciduous tree with a compact, upright, oval head, often becoming broadly spreading or slightly weeping with age. Excellent for smaller gardens.
Foliage Color: A major feature: leaves emerge a dramatic glossy copper-purple , gradually turn to a bronzy-green in summer, and then explode into fiery red, orange, and yellow tints in the autumn.
Flowers: Masses of fragrant, long-lasting, dusky-pink blossoms appear in mid-spring, contrasting beautifully with the new purple leaves. Great for bees.
Fruit: Produces small, deep purple-red crabapples that are highly persistent, hanging on the branches like 'baubles' well into winter, providing food for birds .
Size: A small tree, making it versatile for many spaces.
Height: Typically 8–13 ft (2.5–4 m).
Spread: 8–13 ft (2.5–4 m).
Growing Information
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for the most intense foliage colour and best fruit set. Will tolerate partial shade.
Hardiness Zone: Fully hardy.
Soil: Thrives in any moderately fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. Tolerant of a range of soil types and pH levels.
Care: Generally low-maintenance and noted for its good disease resistance (particularly to apple scab). Prune lightly in winter to remove dead or crossing branches and maintain shape.
Note: This tree offers year-round interest—purple spring leaves, pink flowers, green summer foliage, red autumn colour, and persistent winter fruit.
