The Apple 'Beauty of Bath' tree (Malus domestica 'Beauty of Bath') is a classic, very early-season English apple, famed as one of the first apples of the year.
Essential Characteristics
-
Fruit: Small to medium, round, and somewhat flattened. Skin is pale yellow-green, heavily flushed and striped with bright red. The creamy-white flesh is often tinged pink beneath the skin.
-
Flavour: Sharp and tangy when picked early, mellowing to a sweeter, juicy flavor as it fully ripens. It has a lovely, fresh-off-the-tree taste.
-
Use: An excellent dessert apple best eaten straight off the tree as it does not store well (tends to go soft and "mealy" within a few days). 😋
-
Tree Habit: Moderately vigorous, with a spreading growth habit. Good disease resistance, especially to Scab.
-
Pollination: Not self-fertile (Pollination Group 2 or 3). Requires a partner from groups 1, 2, 3, or 4 to ensure a good crop.
Growing Information ☀️
-
Ripening: Very early season, ready for picking from late July to early August.
-
Note: The apples tend to drop from the tree when perfectly ripe, so prompt picking is essential.
-
Sunlight: Prefers a sunny, sheltered position to encourage the best flavor and coloration.
-
Soil: Thrives in deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates a range of soil pH (acid to neutral).
- Size: Ultimate size is controlled by the rootstock; typically grows into a medium-sized tree, suitable for most gardens.
