Amelanchier lamarckii, commonly known as Juneberry or Snowy Mespilus, is a versatile, deciduous large shrub or small tree highly valued for providing interest across all four seasons.
-
Growth Habit: It typically grows as a multi-stemmed tree or large upright shrub, reaching an ultimate height and spread of approximately 4 to 8 meters. It has a fine-textured, elegant branching structure.
-
Spring: In early spring, the tree produces a profusion of star-shaped white flowers held in drooping racemes. Simultaneously, the emerging young leaves have a distinctive bronze or copper tint, which creates a soft, ethereal aesthetic.
-
Summer Fruit: Following the flowers, small round berries develop. They transition from green to red and finally to a dark purple-black in summer. These berries are edible, sweet, and highly attractive to birds.
-
Autumn Color: One of its strongest features is its autumn display. The finely toothed, elliptical leaves turn brilliant shades of orange, fiery red, and gold before falling.
-
Bark and Winter Interest: The bark is smooth and grey with subtle vertical fissures, providing a clean architectural silhouette during the winter months.
-
Growing Conditions: It is exceptionally hardy and adaptable. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. While it can tolerate slightly alkaline conditions, it may develop lime-induced chlorosis (yellowing leaves) in very chalky soils.
